Dutch language course
Why?
In order to get a maximum benefit from your stay in Antwerp, we strongly recommend everyone to engage in a Dutch language course. Even if Alsem is a study programme in English, it is advisable to learn some ‘survival Dutch’. The language course provides not only a linguistic and cultural preparation, it is also an excellent opportunity to socialize with other foreign students and to make new friends in a new environment and so feel at home.
We believe this is the first step to grow as world citizen, acquainted to different cultures.
When and how?
First semester :
- Erasmus Intensive Language Course, EILC
Students who enrol for the first semester can participate in the EILC Dutch course. It is organised by various institutions. The 1st semester Plantijn University College also offers the possibility to enrol as explained before.
This course combines basic language skills with background of Belgian culture. The credits involved will be added to your learning agreement. It is pre-sessional to the study programme as it already starts at the end of August. The students have to apply for a grant through the Erasmus coordinator of their home institution by using the application form on the EILC website.

Download the EILC-application form and fill out electronically. Submit the document by e-mail to the Erasmus Office at your home institution, no later than the date specified by your university. If accepted, the Erasmus contact person should forward the form by e-mail to the organising institution of the EILC-programme before the application deadline.
- Artesis Dutch language course
Another option for Alsem students in the 1st semester is to enlist in the Dutch course organised by Artesis University College. This course focuses on language development only. The credits involved will also be added to the learning agreement. It is pre-sessional to the study programme as it already starts at the beginning of September. You can apply directly via the international Office of Artesis University College. (

Second semester :
Erasmus Intensive Language Course, EILC
Students who enrol for the second semester can participate in the EILC course as mentioned above under the first semester. However, as Elementary Dutch is a topic in the course list of the international class of the 2nd semester, the necessity of studying Dutch prior to the international class is less urgent.
During both semesters the language centre of the university of Antwerp, LINGUAPOLIS, Institute for Language and Communication, organizes various intensive language courses at the beginning of each semester and during the academic year. Please visit Linguapolis for a complete overview of the various languages they offer. www.linguapolis.be
